It is planted right with and next to rose bushes, and my rose bush closest to it actually got aphids on it this year. What happened?! I am in the process of cutting it back. It was a good sized bush, and when I pulled it back, I found a TON! UGH!! How did it go with hosing them off aside from the small amount that was still there. I have thought about buying lady bugs, but I read somewhere they could bring disease. Do you have thoughts on this?Joellenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4470805731558813695.post-76578045583408673002014-03-19T14:33:00.373-06:002014-03-19T14:33:00.373-06:00I snipped & saved the photo from Google, then ...I snipped & saved the photo from Google, then drew my fenceline and garden border with a pretty basic photo program, then shrank my garden layout (in MS Publisher)into the border lines. I did have to guess a little with where things would actually be, but I think I got it fairly close. :-)

A deer has been by a couple of times, but I think the dogs make it a less appealing place to visit (the neighbor says they used to pass through here often). I do have some concerns about the raccoons causing mayhem, but so far they're staying out of things. How did you do that?

I ended up with the wrong asparagus due to nursery shipping errors (2ce!). I let what I have grow and I harvest, but I'm not in love with it. If I didn't have a herd of deer devastating the grounds I'd go for berry bushes too. Darn them.

Hope you'll keep us updated at the season goes by. Our next door neighbor has a maple and it pained me to watch her son put leaves in the yard waste bin. I told him he was welcome to pile them in my yard but he didn't. This year, I know them better and will get them from her. We also got a bunch from an older lady who we met at the HOA meeting, apologizing for not having the pile of leaves taken care of. After the meeting, I asked her address and told her we'd come take them away.

I'll have to find the plant exchange group. I think I found it a while back but I forgot to re-find it this spring. Thanks for the reminder. I'm in the Tacoma area. I checked out some of your recent posts. Looks like you found a sweet little home, and with extra space for gardening, how cool is that?

You really lucked out on getting those concrete blocks for your raised beds. I have similar and they are ever so much better than wood. I have a similar problem finding leaves for compost. We have so few deciduous trees, and so many firs and cedars, which are not so much use for building compost. Nothing wrong with bringing your compost with you, making it is hard work.

You and your husband have done a great job, I love your layout! Kudos to you on finding so much good stuff on Craigslist and Freecycle.

There is an active group on the Gardenweb Plant Exchange, they have two plant swaps a year right down there in Olympia.

Sorry I wrote a novel as my comment.Alisonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16323262555906240701noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4470805731558813695.post-53490261407023788692013-05-21T00:26:28.788-06:002013-05-21T00:26:28.788-06:00I did some reading and I think the veggies they...I did some reading and I think the veggies they're most likely to eat can be covered (or shared). I did discover it snipped the tip off the tomato DH bought (though I have some more little ones that will go out later)and one ate the tip of my little Jostaberry I planted out front.

Of course, I think it was just one deer who came to visit. I could be in trouble if it comes back later with some friends. :-)

It sounds like if I add fruit trees next year, I'll probably need to protect them until they get bigger though.Amyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13306754150860679811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4470805731558813695.post-5866641772315589752013-05-19T08:50:19.966-06:002013-05-19T08:50:19.966-06:00My parents have had some luck using coyote urine. ...My parents have had some luck using coyote urine. I've taken to placing fence hoops over some beds to protect the greens. But they also eat my pole beans. When it came in the mail, it was nasty out still, so it started getting a bit moldy inside. But so far, most of it is popping up in the garden. Maybe yours will do just as well.
